Supermicro collaborates with xAI to build the Colossus Supercomputer
Supermicro (NASDAQ:SMCI), a global leader in providing solutions for enterprise infrastructure, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and 5G telecommunications and edge computing, has outfitted xAI Colossus Supercomputer with advanced liquid-cooled racks.
This supercomputer leverages servers built on the NVIDIA HGX platform, featuring a versatile Supermicro 4U liquid cooling system designed to support hot-swapping of individual GPU components. Each rack accommodates eight servers, with an additional Supermicro 4U unit at the base of each rack, which includes a redundant pumping system and monitoring capabilities.
Colossus is notable for being the world’s largest AI supercomputer and is owned by xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk. It represents the most extensive computing cluster globally for AI training purposes. Remarkably, the deployment of the Colossus AI Supercomputer was accomplished in just 122 days, setting a new record in the field.
