Pioneer Corporation announced that the company's first internal BD/DVD writer with ATAPI connection for Windows PCs has recently been developed. The new Pioneer BDR-101A complies with the latest specifications for the BD-R (Blu-ray Disc recordable), BD-RE (Blu-ray Disc rewritable), and the BD-ROM (Blu-ray Disc read-only memory). It is expected to start shipping at the end of January, 2006 (Shipment schedules may change depending on the start date for the Blu-ray Disc format logo license and the copyright protection technology license).

Lite-On IT estimates it will ship 9.0-9.5 million slim-type optical disc drives (ODDs) for this year and expects to double shipment volume in 2006 due to growing global demand for notebook PCs and large orders from new clients, according to associated vice president Mike Wu for the company’s production base in Guangzhou, China.

ASBIS is to start shipments of the world's first 2.5-inch disc drive built on perpendicular recording technology - a 160GB notebook hard drive Seagate Momentus 5400.3. This brand-new notebook drive further closes the capacity and performance gap between desktop and notebook PC hard drives as more users replace aging desktop systems with fast, high-capacity notebook computers. ASBIS offices throughout the EMEA region are expected to start offering this unique drive to local customers in January 2006.

Lite-On IT see DVD burners as percentage of total ODD shipments up
Lite-On’s monthly shipment volume of ODDs has remained steady at 3.5-4.0 million units but the proportion for DVD burners has risen from less than 30% in the first half of this year to over 30% this quarter and is expected to attain 40% in the first or second quarter of 2006, the company pointed out.
The increase in percentage of total ODD shipments for DVD burners was because prices of DVD burners have continually fallen to levels increasingly closer to those of Combo drives (CD-RW plus DVD-ROM) and CD-RW burners, Lite-On IT noted.
